Where Karrie's Restaurant Buys Corned Beef for Reuben
Many metro Detroit restaurants and delis certainly know how to stack a corned beef sandwich. And on St. Patrick's Day, it's as symbolic as sipping a pint of Guinness.
Restaurants and delis will be serving sandwiches piled high with tender and thinly sliced corned beef topped in a variety of ways.
"It's kind of like paczki day," said Al Winkler, owner of seven Bread Basket Deli restaurants in metro Detroit. "People line up outside the building."
Winkler, who's been in business for 53 years, uses the Sy Ginsberg brand of corned beef and will go through about 30,000 pounds this week.
Teresa Bolan, the owner of Noah's Deli in Dearborn, is ready for customers this St. Patrick's Day.
"I'll at least double the amount of corned beef for sandwiches, and I always have corned beef and cabbage soup, too," Bolan said.

Popular sandwiches, Bolan says, include the Dinty Moore and Noah's Double Trouble. The Dinty Moore features a choice of corned beef, pastrami or turkey. It's served on grilled rye topped with Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing. Noah's Double Trouble has corned beef and pastrami on grilled rye with Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing.
At Noah's, everything is housemade daily. Bolan is there every day, arriving at 2 a.m. to cook the meats and make the soups.
"It's no big deal because I love it," Bolan said. "I love that it's fresh every day and hands-on."
What's unique about Detroit's corned beef offerings is longtime local brands. Some places are specific about whether they offer Grobbel's, Sy Ginsberg and Wigley's corned beef brands — all hail from Detroit. Topped with Swiss and sauerkraut or served plain, here's a sampling of spots for corned beef sandwiches around metro Detroit.
